Chris Hynnes

Now THIS is your typical "autographed prospect card" circa the mid-1990s--a signed card of a player who was a long shot to make it in the NHL, and yet was included in this prospect set.

Chris Hynnes was selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1991 Supplemental Draft. If you are wondering what the heck the Supplemental Draft was, it was a way for the NHL to draft college hockey players who were not eligible for the normal Entry Draft. This way, the player's rights would be owned by a team, and they could not negotiate as a free agent.

Thus, Hynes was definitely not a prospect by 1994. He had already moved on to another organization (Ottawa) and was playing in the CoHL (Colonial Hockey League)--two steps below the NHL level. He played in the minor leagues until 1999, then 2 more seasons in Germany.

Ahhh the CoHL. I was a regular for a while at the Thunder Bay Senators games until I moved away. He came with the team just after I left. During my time watching the Thunder Bay Senators, Thunder Cats or whatever they were calling themselves, I got a chance to see some pretty good guys like Sakic (Brian) and Tsyplakov. My favoutire was Jason Firth and he was a legit minor league superstar! Just check out his numbers.

Even his AHL numbers were decent, I have no idea why he never got his shot. He was the best player I have ever seen who never skated a second in the NHL.

If you ever come across his auto, I would LOVE to trade/buy or whatever it from you. However, I imagine there isn't much in the way of product with him on it.

I think Jason Firth had a few cards in the OHL sets put out in the early 1990s.

Yeah I have seen a few of those...but nothing from the other released with a certified auto on it...
